The Jesup Drive-In, currently closed for renovation, will be under new ownership as of January 1, 2012. The Cockfield family, who have owned by the Drive-In for 41 years, are “passing the torch” to new owners Ralph and Jamie Hickox of Jesup. The Drive-In, which has been closed for remodeling, will reopen on February 1, 2012.

 

The new owners plan to improve the experience of the Drive-In by enhancing the nostalgic ambience. Plans include adding décor from the 1950 – 1960’s era. One specific addition will be “car hops”, waiters/waitresses dressed in 50’s attire, to take food orders from your car. Food orders will also be able to be called in by phone or via text message. Renovations to the concession stand and providing more food choices will also be part of the new experience. A more long-term plan is to add “box seating” in a central location where viewers can sit together in one area instead of in their own cars. “We think this will provide a place for parties that is missing currently,” explained new owner, Ralph Hickox.

 

An improved web-site will offer viewers the opportunity to make reservations for particular parking spots in advance.  “Many of the Drive-Ins customers are from surrounding areas or even traveling and this will provide them a guarantee that they will have a spot when they arrive,” explained Hickox.  The addition of an ATM machine will allow movie goers another added convenience.

 

The facility will also become multi-purpose. Consideration is being given to opening the facility for “flea markets” on the weekend.  More long term plans include the addition of a stage for live performances, such as, Bluegrass or gospel festivals and concerts. “Jamie and I are very excited and look forward to making Jesup’s Drive-In Theater a destination for visitors to the region. We’re fortunate in Jesup to have one of only a few Drive-Ins left in the entire nation and the oldest Drive-In in Georgia,” Hickox stated.

The Hickoxs also own two other businesses in Jesup, Arctic South Heating & Air and RE/MAX Vision Real Estate and Property Management.
